“The Euro Café” Brings Delicious Cuisines to Wellan
Each year, the third year students in Lower Elementary look forward to opening their own in-school restaurant for their families. The “café program,” which is in its 8th year, is a unique experiential learning opportunity that has become a treasured tradition at Wellan. Opening the café is a capstone experience for third year students, who are responsible for all aspects of the planning and set up, including menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and serving the meal to parents and Wellan guests. It requires them to collaborate as a group to accomplish their goals as they learn to share responsibilities and delegate tasks. It is also a great opportunity for them to demonstrate their leadership skills and highlight the executive functioning skills they have gained during their time in Lower Elementary.
This year’s third graders named their restaurant the “Euro Café,” a restaurant that specialized in the cuisine from a different European country each month. Guests at the café took a culinary journey from France to Greece to Italy, each month enjoying delicacies like quiche, spanakopita and tiramisu. The attentive service and good company were enjoyed by all who dined at the Euro Café, and the pride and confidence with which the third years managed their responsibilities is a testament to their hard work and dedication. We give the Euro Café five stars!
